A Soil Owner’s Manual

soil owner

Understand soil has truly impacted how I look at planting my food-plots, positively. Jon Stika, wrote – “A Soil Owner’s Manual”, and my journey for more knowledge was started. Jon does not spend time in this book talking about synthetics and heavy soil amendments, alternatively, Jon, explains how the soil functions and how our native pristine soils were built through diversity and natural processes/occurrences.

There is nothing wrong with using some of the great food plot companies, like Killer Food Plots, seed blends. However, if you are getting tired of having to add tons of lime, fertilizer,  herbicides, and want to learn how the soil truly functions, I suggest starting with this book.  You will learn how soil and plants work together through a symbiotic relationship, and how we as managers can take advantage of this process. We can increase our soil fertility and eventually plant nutrient density by staying true to these processes.

I personally still plant 10 (+/-) acres of food plots a year, after reading this book and others – I have learned to let my plants do the work for me. I have reduced my fertilizer, herbicide, and lime needs – all while increasing my OM (organic matter) and hopefully the nutrient density as well.

I hope you enjoyed this brief blog on how we can better our soils and our deer! I give this book a 5-star review and look forward to reading it again soon.
